Celestion Speakers T-Numbers List

Celestion Speakers T-Numbers List

All Celestion speakers have a model number denoting their specification, usually beginning with the letter T. This apparently represents the word ‘type’. Speakers with the ‘CT’ and ‘RT’ prefix are said to represent ‘Rola type’ and ‘Celestion type’.

A letter ‘A’ or ‘B’ after the T number can be overlooked. This is for internal use at Celestion, and they have asked me not to publish what it really means. For example T3904A and T3904B are both speakers made to the same specification.

The T-number list below has been compiled from various sources, and I have tried to keep it focused on guitar speaker models.

If you are looking for information about vintage Vox related Celestion speakers, check out the Vox Supreme website run by Nicholas Orchard. It is very regularly updated with new information and is fast growing into an excellent resource!

Share your Celestion T-numbers!

If you know of any Celestion t-numbers that are missing from the list, or see anything that needs altering, then please email me, or add a comment at the bottom of the page. I will update the list accordingly when time permits. Guitar speakers only please.

Please try and include as much information as possible including cone stamps, impedance, and power ratings, the amp or cab they came from, and ideally some photos. The more info the better. People do email regularly to tell me what a useful resource this is, so lets keep up the good work and keep sharing the knowledge.

Big thanks to everyone who has contributed so far, with special thanks to the members of The Marshall Amp Forum. Thanks to ‘GIBSON67’ in particular for his huge list. Thanks also to ‘Jeff West’ for his 10″ and Vox speakers list.

Please remember that Celestion speakers evolved through the years. Certain details such as cone stamps and other part numbers, may be different depending on when the speaker was made.

The list is now searchable and sortable. Click a heading to sort by that column, or use the search box to find your speaker model. Enjoy!

What about the 16 ohm V30 T5225 and 8 ohm V30 T5273, both carrying the cone stamp 1777? Probably not an error: official photos depict this stamp in clear view, as if to point out it was intentionally made with this cone.

Cheers, mate! Just figured since there’s a consensus that V30s always were and always will be 444 cones. Anything else would be chalked down as a factory misstake with stamping the cones incorrectly. Not so the case here, it would seem.

444 is a Bass cone, and 1777 is a Lead cone..

    8ohm Celestion-branded V30
    Ipswitch Suffolk England label
NO side sticker or trace thereof
    Beige-goldish frame
Small vent hole without mesh cover on back (about the same size as the “o” in ohms)

    Cone stamp: 444
    Frame stamp: 26AL T3903/2.

Origin unknown, bought used, claimed UK iirc but who knows

Wondering about the slash-two-period (T3903/2.) in the model code, anyone know what that’s all about?

Hi, thanks for the info Andrew. Some T-numbers have additional digits appended to the end such as letter ‘A’ or ‘B’. I’m not sure what their meaning is, but pretty sure they are basically the same speaker regardless. Looking around online there seems to be conflicting info on T5356 power rating, some people say 40w, some 35w, and some 30w.

      regards, Brian.

Hi Richie, can you email me some photos? the x is just an inspection character or factory code, not part of the model number. They added it to the end of the model number for a short period in the mid 70’s. So the model is T1920. It is on the list as “PS12, ceramic, 8 Ohm, 20w, red/white label – twin cone.” Have you tried emailing drdecibel@celestion.com? They should be able to tell you more.

Actually, can you email me some photos of your speaker please? Something isn’t right. If you do a google image search for “celestion ps12” there are a few examples of T1920 that show up and they are all 20w on the label. So based on that I will have to change it back to 20w. They are not a H magnet speaker either. Yours may have a smudged code that you are not reading correctly? I need to see it really.

A topic often missunderstod and miscredited as defense of the G12T75 devider is the transition from the G12-65 to the early G12T75s. Now on various online-forumes I’ve tried to tell this story to my best abilities. However not knowing the exact details on what happened when and (exactly) why I feel I tend to fall a bit short of the finish line.

I am familiar with the broader strokes of the story, how Celestion started using Fane patented glass fibre VCs in the late 1970 and mid ’80s went to Kapton, I believe, which came to be known as the first T75s: the White Labels. Shortly after the rear vents were omitted.

Then Marshall seems to have been displeased with the amount of cut from these drivers that they asked Celestion “how about using the K damper?” which leads us to the G12T75 we love to hate… or other. 😉

Now these may not be the more classic Celestion speakers and the story merely a bracket in speaker evolution, I so would have loved to get the story straight and void of too much guesswork. I do not expect you to deliver it on a silver platter, rather I wouldn’t mind doing some digging of my own – if only I knew where to dig. Any spot that picks your fancy? 😉

    Kind regards.

Hi Jonas, very interesting. That is all new to me to be honest. G12T-75’s have never been my thing really. Regarding “where to dig”, I can only recommend the usual places – obviously ask dr.decibel on the celestion website first port of call. Ask around on forums etc. Just be very careful who you listen to. There is a lot of nonsense that gets written, even from people who are supposedly experts and claim to have owned hundreds of speakers. The problem is Celestion rarely give out detailed information about their suppliers or specification changes like that, or perhaps they just dont know themselves anymore, so a lot of things you might read have just been passed down the grapevine so many times people think they are facts. Some classic examples are “all 1777 cones are Kurt Muellers”, “Celestion became Rola in 1970”. Some people still believe that stuff, it is ingrained in their brains. One of the main reasons I started this website was to put right a lot of these misconceptions flying around the web.

Probably the best way to learn in my opinion is to get your hands dirty. Buy lots of speakers, repair and dissect the faulty ones. Note any spec changes you see and hear. Stay inquisitive and just get stuck in. The things you learn from practical experience will often prove wrong the information you pick up from reading and asking around. That was certainly my experience anyway.

      Hope that helps,

      Brian.

Unfortunately what little I know about the G12-65 – G12T75 transition thing is what I have derived from various forums, however there seems to be this mindset that all T75s are identical and any difference in tone would have to be down to level of break-in or other argument to fit with their supposition, much like what you said.

I believe the VC former and damper stayed with the 75 through out the white label era but couldn’t say about the Power Speakers era. This era does seem to be a slim window just prior to the Professional Loudspeaker era, at which point the K parts would have had to be implemented.

If I was to buy speakers to find out once and for all that would likely be a Power Speaker one to more or less prove my thesis true. Unfortunately they are like hen’s teeth, particularly around these parts.

Say, Brian — The specs listed for “T5667 G10N-40 Ceramic 8 Ohm” speaker are wrong, compared to what you have for the “T5684 G10N-40 Ceramic 16 Ohm” version, which is “40w, 95dB, 98Hz, 1.75″ coil”, the same as Celestion’s page for the G10N-40 lists for both impedances (https://celestion.com/product/32/g10n40/). Hi, me again. Found a picture on the internet now with a Rola, T1480 which is the 8 Ohm version of G15 C. Bass resonance is indicated with 55 here. Not as my 15 Ohm 1968 model with 56 c/s. misprints ?

    • Brian Harding
      Author
      April 9, 2020 / 3:06 pm

Hi Stefan, thanks for the info. I have added T1480. It is likely Celestion made several different versions of the G15C with different T-numbers and slightly different in specification somehow. So there are probably more than just one 8 ohm version and one 16 ohm version of the G15C. They also changed the information on the labels through the years. The pre-rola vs Rola labels will often show slightly different information, even though the spec of the speaker is in theory the same. I do not have much knowledge or experience with the 15 inch Celestions but am happy to add them to the list for reference. Maybe someone else can clarify?

      Hope that helps, Brian.

    70th Anniversary (T4533 / T4534) also have a 53H1777 cone.

Brian, am looking at some graybacks with 1973 date codes, I know they were short lived between green and black, correct me if I am wrong, is it possible they have pulsonic cones!

Hi Tom, yes it is possible they might have pulsonic cones, but it is not guaranteed. If I remember rightly the RIC cones start to appear around August 73, roughly the same time the grey magnet covers first appear. However there is some overlap with the different cone types they were using. I have had and seen plenty of greybacks with pulsonic cones. The RIC cones in late 73 might not have the RIC stamp on them. They can be blank or have yellow chalk markings on them instead. They are quite distinctive in appearance and sound though in my opinion and should be easy to identify.

      Hope that helps,

      Brian.

    T6329B Redback 16ohm has 15635 cone.
    T5891B Creamback 16ohm has

Celestion added “A” or “B” at the end of the T number.
Viewing all the speaker on Thomann I can see “A” is for China and “B” is for UK made speakers.
Probably to differentiate if production moves to a different country in the future.

        IL try in a moment
It’s typical early 80s dark stamp hard to get a picture of
        It’s 2872 though
In fact other than the alu dust cap and the T number it matches another on your list so I’m assuming it’s a variation of the g12-125
It came out of a sharma cab similar to a Leslie from a local (Bournemouth) church organ if that information is of any use
        I’m thinking it’s probably a 55hz fs at a wild guess

Hi Jeff, it depends when they were made. Your blackbacks are likely from 75 to 79. Celestion were always making changes to their speakers through the years. The magnet covers were green from about 1966 to 1973, grey from late 73 to early 74, cream from early 74 to early 75, black from early 75 to 79. They also used different cone suppliers through the years. These pages might help.

Thanks, Brian. Right, I saw your how-to-date vintage celestion greenbacks link that mentioned that T1281 greenbacks were highly sought after. Mine date to 1978 and seem to be valuable. Which is ironic because these T1281’s were in a Rivera 2×12 cabinet in 2005 I bought from a guy on Craigslist, instead of (new) Celestion 70/80’s or G12H’s. I was trusting, didn’t remove the back cover & they sounded good. I took the back cover off for recording later and saw they were older. I didn’t realize they’re vintage! Thanks again.

Hi. Thanks for compiling this list

I have two T2348 ten inch celestions.

They were originally in a Selmer SS30 combo

Date codes are LM18 (as best I can tell) so 1979

I can just make out 2348

The frames are black. The rear plastic covers are black/grey. Only one of the speakers had any stamps and they are only just legible being stamped in black ink on the black frame. There could be more to the markings or there could just be excess ink but impossible to read.

There are no cone markings and I believe they are original

There are stickers reading “Manufactured and designed to Selmer London specification” on the plastic back covers though I have no idea if they were a design exclusive to Selmer.

    Thanks

Hi Gregory, thanks for the info, I will update the table. These are basically a 10″ greenback style speaker as far as I know. I have seen examples of them before without the Selmer label, but it is possible they are a Selmer exclusive model. Usual cone stamp is ‘1129’. Should be great sounding speakers if they are working properly and still in good condition. regards, Brian.

Hello. I would appreciate some help:
I’ve just got two 70 anniversary G12H with a T4533B code and the data code is BG28.
It says “Made in UK” in the sticker but everything is very confusing since I cannot find what does the “B” mean and the date code is wrong too. It is clearly a “modern” speaker so it should have the number before the letters like “28BG” instead the “BG28”.
Am I dealing with a fake?
Thank you for your help in advance.

    R.

    • Brian Harding
      Author
      October 27, 2022 / 4:49 pm

Hi Ricardo, sorry for the late reply. A BG28 date code would be 28th Feb 2021, and is in the correct MYDD format for the period. The letter ‘B’, or ‘A’, at the end of the T-number is not part of the model number and can be ignored. It is only for internal use at Celestion.

As far as I am aware there are no fakes of modern Celestion speakers around, so do not worry about that. People only need to be vigilant about the older speakers from the 1960’s – the ‘pre-rola’ speakers. A certain notorious vintage amp dealer in UK used to fake the model numbers, date codes and cone codes. Anything more recent is unlikely to be fake. More info on that on my page here: https://www.bygonetones.com/fake-vintage-celestion-pre-rola-greenbacks.html

      Hope that helps, Brian.

Hi Timmy, if you send me some photos info@bygonetones.com I’ll take a closer look, but if they are original to a 70’s Roost cabinet, then the codes are probably 13th and 14th Oct 1976. Letter ‘R’ does not compute as a month code, so they are probably ‘K’ for Oct. Or maybe the codes are back to front, I would have to see photos to confirm that.

Brian – thank you for this compilation.

No surprises but 1) an additional number in the sequence and 2) an observation the same model number manufactured in England and China with different rear castngs …
    I have just removed a:
    T5339 G12P-80 Ceramic 8ohm “For Vox Amplification” “22 HP 50” {from a ‘Blue Series’ VOX Valvetronix AD60VT} Cone stamp 6 50 02
    {I replaced it with an Ipswich England, Century Vintage T5348 16 ohm}

Interestingly because I’m similarly in the process of acquiring a pair of Century Vintage for my VOX AD120VT I have found that:
T5348A were also manufactured in China HA 21 with a different fin layout (fewer and chunkier) on the rear Neo casting – but using the same model number …

Hi Tim, sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the info on the T5339, I have added it to the list. According to the new Celestion book the Neodymium magnets were re-designed “to attenuate the excessive treble that had plagued earlier designs”. The ‘fins’ are there to disperse heat. regards, Brian.

Hi Brian, I bought a cabinet with two mystery Celestions in it, and they’re not in this list. I hope it’s a useful contribution. I’ll email Celestion about it, as you suggested to other commenters.
    G12-100
Type: T2949 (on chassis, not on label)
Chassis: KM 3? (two characters legible, a third one faded, looks like a “3”. Suggests 1979, based on my research)
Chassis also has a “P” in a circle by the other codes, no idea what this means
    No visible cone code
    15 Ohm

Can’t find anything about this speaker, other than an archived classified ad saying “Dual Concentric Driver”, which corresponds to the speaker I have

    Can provide pictures if necessary.

    Kind regards,
    IJsbrand
